(Albany, NY) AP (04/20/04) -- Opponents of crow-shooting competitions will be
in Albany Tuesday to discuss legislation banning such events.

Assemblywoman Deborah Glick of Manhattan is sponsoring a bill addressing the
issue of crow shoots in the city of Auburn and elsewhere. She'll meet with
Rita Sarnicola of Auburn Citizens Opposed to Crow Shooting, state wildlife
pathologist Ward Stone, and a representative of the Fund for Animals.

Glick's bill outlaws contests where the goal is to kill the greatest number
of animals.

Residents of Auburn, 20 miles west of Syracuse, have complained for years
about tens of thousands of crows that roost there in the winter.

A local tavern owner has been holding crow-shooting contests for the past few
years. About 50 people marched in protest of the hunt last February. The
two-day event drew about 200 shooters who bagged more than a thousand birds.

"True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to fore only
when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test
(which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those
who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a
fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it."
