A bishop in Umbria is to abandon six centuries of tradition for the sake of 
political correctness after British animal rights campaigners persuaded him to 
reform a ritual in which a live dove is dropped from a church roof.


After protests by groups including one whose patron is Ann Widdecombe, the 
Conservative MP, the new Bishop of Orvieto has angered his predecessor and the 
town authorities by agreeing to reform the ritual, suggesting a plastic replica 
is used instead.
In the event, each Pentecost Sunday, known as the Palombella, a dove is put 
in a transparent pipe fixed to the centre of a metal wheel, around which 
sparklers are attached.
