A bishop in Umbria is to abandon six centuries of tradition for the sake of
political correctness after British animal rights campaigners persuaded him to
reform a ritual in which a live dove is dropped from a church roof.
After protests by groups including one whose patron is Ann Widdecombe, the
Conservative MP, the new Bishop of Orvieto has angered his predecessor and the
town authorities by agreeing to reform the ritual, suggesting a plastic replica
is used instead.
In the event, each Pentecost Sunday, known as the Palombella, a dove is put
in a transparent pipe fixed to the centre of a metal wheel, around which
sparklers are attached.

"True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to fore only
when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test
(which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those
who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a
fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it."
