Leading Green to march against animal cruelty near Primate research lab
Green Party spokesperson Margaret Wright will march for animals subjected to
cruel research in laboratories on Saturday, 17th April. Margaret lives in
Cambridge, close to a Primate Research Facility which has long been the subject of
concern for animal rights campaigners.
Margaret Wright, who is the East's lead Euro-election candidate, commented:
"Animals have rights that must be properly protected in law, an animal dies
every 12 seconds in UK laboratories, and every 3 seconds in European
laboratories. The Green Party is opposed to vivisection and believe that far-reaching
changes are needed to UK and EU policy in a wide range of areas including
farming, scientific research, land use and economics."
Speaking on the Huntingdon Primate Research lab, Margaret said: "The ethics
of research on animals has most recently been highlighted by the decision of
the University of Cambridge not to go ahead with its high profile Primate
Research Facility in Huntingdon Road. Popular opposition was very probably a factor
in the University's decision."
Margaret Wright concluded:
"While the chemicals that we use must be safe for us and not harm the
environment, cruel animal-based toxicity tests must be replaced by humane
alternatives. Many people believe that medical progress cannot be achieved without animal
testing. However support for alternative methods is growing and there is a
body of research which shows that drugs tested on animals can still harm humans."
Note:
1. The March will take place at 12 noon-2.p.m. Parker's Piece, Cambridge at
the stall in the Marquee.

“I personally cannot get overly worked up about the deprivation of human
rights in a world where non-humans have no rights at all. Until animals and nature
have rights, none of us have any rights at all because without animals,
ecosystems and nature's diversity, rights are meaningless. Humans are a group that
was never very successful to begin with. Overly territorial, obsessed with
trivialities, violent, petty, and completely lacking in empathy for other
species. The world would be a much nicer place without us." Captain Paul Watson
