Leading Green to march against animal cruelty near Primate research lab 
Green Party spokesperson Margaret Wright will march for animals subjected to 
cruel research in laboratories on Saturday, 17th April. Margaret lives in 
Cambridge, close to a Primate Research Facility which has long been the subject of 
concern for animal rights campaigners.
Margaret Wright, who is the East's lead Euro-election candidate, commented:
"Animals have rights that must be properly protected in law, an animal dies 
every 12 seconds in UK laboratories, and every 3 seconds in European 
laboratories. The Green Party is opposed to vivisection and believe that far-reaching 
changes are needed to UK and EU policy in a wide range of areas including 
farming, scientific research, land use and economics."
Speaking on the Huntingdon Primate Research lab, Margaret said: "The ethics 
of research on animals has most recently been highlighted by the decision of 
the University of Cambridge not to go ahead with its high profile Primate 
Research Facility in Huntingdon Road. Popular opposition was very probably a factor 
in the University's decision."
Margaret Wright concluded:
"While the chemicals that we use must be safe for us and not harm the 
environment, cruel animal-based toxicity tests must be replaced by humane 
alternatives. Many people believe that medical progress cannot be achieved without animal 
testing. However support for alternative methods is growing and there is a 
body of research which shows that drugs tested on animals can still harm humans."
