AR-News: (US) Humane Society to Regain Control of D.C. Shelter

The D.C. government is set to return operation of the city's animal
shelter to the Washington Humane Society next week, nearly three months
after the contract was supposed to be finalized, officials said yesterday.

Although the city and the Humane Society agreed to terms in January, the
contract was held up because District officials had to get approval from
Congress for additional funding, a process that took 30 days. Then the
contract -- a three-year deal with a two-year option worth at least $2.2
million annually -- went to the D.C. Council last week for a five-day review.
