Subject: [The Human Race] 2 nursing moms and pups need a lift from Clinton to Albany - 04/17

Dear Friends,

I know many of you are involved in rescue so I'm going to throw this out there and see if anyone can help us out. We're going down to Katie's Rescue Shelter in WV on April 16th - 17th, to bring up a load of dogs for rescues and adopters in NJ and PA. There are a few groups further north willing to take some dogs if we can just get them a little closer. One group up in Syracuse, NY can take in two nursing mom's and their pups if we can get them as close as Albany.

We're doing a 24 hour round trip drive from NJ to WV and back and we will end our leg of the transport in Clinton, NJ (off of route 78), at about 5:00. Albany is roughly 2.5 hours from Clinton. We need someone to take these little families from that meeting spot to a meeting point in or near Albany. Better yet, if we could find someone to drive this distance on a regular basis (no more than once per month), this particular rescue would take many more dogs from Katie's Rescue Shelter.

If you've never participated in a rescue transport before, but think you might like to, we'll gladly give you the run down on how it works and answer any questions you might have. It's rewarding and fun, yet a very important and direct way to help save the lives of abandoned animals.

Let me explain why we do this for those of you who are not familiar. The abundance of homeless animals is a problem everywhere in the US, but nowhere like West Virginia. Not only are the numbers of abandoned and homeless animals staggering, but the methods of "management" and "disposal" employed are often crude and brutal. To compound the problem, there are very few people in WV willing or able to help in any significant way. In NJ, PA and other northern states, there are a remarkable number of caring people and rescue groups who are able to help. They can take these WV dogs into foster care and get them placed into permanent homes comparatively quickly.

Carrie (from Katie's Rescue), is one of the few people in WV working to solve this problem and she does remarkable things. Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to work with her or see what she accomplishes agrees that what she is doing out there is literally, unbelievable. Yet she does what she does with almost nothing. She goes to all of the local shelters and pounds and pulls out as many of the dogs that are in danger as she possibly can. A good number of them are sick and/or starving, injured, pregnant or nursing with litters. She gets them the medical attention they need and works endlessly to find places for them to go. Last year Carrie took almost 900 dogs and cats from Nicholas County Shelter alone, cutting their euthanasia rate by more than half. The service she is doing these animals is so important and so desperately needed. It's such a simpl e equation, the more we help her, the more she can help them. Learn more about Carrie and the work she is doing at Katie's Rescue Shelter here: http://www.katiesrescue.com

Anyway, I know it was long but thanks for reading and please let us know if you would like to help.

Peace,
Tana
