The Oswego County Animal Welfare League participated in its largest rescue
ever last Saturday when a Brewerton man surrendered 89 animals.
Cruelty investigators arrested the animals’ owner, who has been charged with
two misdemeanors. He could face additional charges in the case.
"The rescue was a big success," said OCAWL president Judy Spicer. "It was the
biggest rescue we’ve ever done, and we’ve never rescued these types of
animals before."
The animals, including rabbits, chickens, geese, and mergansers, lacked
adequate food and water and were confined to small cages or loose in and around a
barn. One rabbit with severe medical complications was euthanized by a
veterinarian.
"They were running lose, they were hungry, and the rabbits had all different
sorts of medical problems," according to the OCAWL president. "They seem to be
happy to be out of there and to be getting food and clean water."
