Hero of the day is Emmy Award-winning writer-director Sam Simon. He directed
an upcoming -- and is there any other kind? -- episode of ABC's oft-hiatused
"The Drew Carey Show" that features dog racing.
Moved by the cruelty in the dog-racing industry, he has signed over his
earnings from the episode -- $92,000 -- to the animal protection group PETA to
raise awareness of and to help end other forms of abuse.
In the episode, which will air this spring, Carey buys a greyhound and races
him with the intention of retiring him to a stud farm to live it up.
"In our show, Drew treats the dog lovingly, like a pet," Simon wrote to PETA,
"but in real life, greyhounds spend virtually their entire lives in cages,
and when they are done racing, they are usually killed, sometimes by painful
electrocution, or sold for laboratory experiments."
