The nationwide battle between two groups over animal rights and treatment may
be coming to the Jackson area within the next two months.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights group, is
planning to demonstrate in front of the Jackson Petco around the end of May or
beginning of June.
PETA has campaigned against Petco, a national pet supply store which sells
animals, for over a year, and has written to the company about alleged abuse
since 1994.
PETA claims that conditions in which many animals live in Petco stores are
deplorable, with overcrowding and inhumane treatment. Petco maintains that all
animals are well taken care of, all employees are trained to care for the
animals and even those buying a pet are asked to fill out a questionnaire to see if
they are a responsible pet owner.
