The sole purpose of this rather undignified behaviour was to track down two
five-month-old ginger piglets that had escaped from an abattoir, swum across
the River Avon and fled into the countryside beyond.
The Tamworth Two's extraordinary bid for freedom gripped the nation for a
week in January 1998.
Their owner wanted them returned and sent back to the slaughterhouse. The
animal-loving public demanded that their lives be spared. The race was on to find
Butch and Sundance and save their bacon.
Tonight the BBC is screening The Legend Of The Tamworth Two (BBC1, 6.30pm) -
a 90-minute film they are promoting as "the real story of the Tamworth Two".
In fact the so-called drama bears no resemblance to the events of that
bizarre week. It was so much more incredible and exciting than the BBC's
fictionalised account.
I should know - because at the end of that exhausting winter night I caught
one of the pigs myself.
