A major Canadian publisher is likely to add to the woes of the beef
industry by releasing a book that blames hamburgers for an "epidemic of
Alzheimer's disease."

Dr. Murray Waldman, a coroner with the City of Toronto and co-author of
the McClelland and Stewart book, Dying for a Hamburger: modern meat
processing and the epidemic of Alzheimer's disease, charges hamburger is
the main source of prions, which trigger Alzheimer's.

Prions, a type of malformed protein found in the brains of infected
animals and humans, are credited as the cause of mad cow disease, several
cases of which have been linked to Canadian cattle, and its human form,
variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The book is slated for release in the next two weeks.
