EVERY day, sick or injured companion animals require blood transfusions as
part of their treatment. However, without the participation of canine and feline
blood donors, these animals in need would not receive critical transfusions
in time. A blood transfusion can mean the difference between life and death for
sick animals.
Although blood transfusions and blood banks for humans have existed for many
years, these services for animals are a fairly recent development. As
transfusion therapy has become more common in the lifesaving treatment of animals, the
use of blood products for treating sick and injured cats and dogs has
increased so dramatically that there is a growing shortage of canine and feline
blood.
