jgerth at courier-journal.com Concerned that animal control officers don't have
the expertise or time to fully investigate all animal cruelty cases in
Jefferson County, three government agencies plan to help them out.
Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson said this week that animal control
officers will team with police and an assistant county attorney to investigate and
prosecute people who harm animals.
Under the plan, four of Louisville Metro Animal Services' control officers
would receive additional training in investigations, including a ride-along with
experienced police officers.
The animal cruelty investigators also can call on police to help them with
more difficult cases.
Additionally, an assistant county attorney will be assigned to work on animal
cruelty cases — which will help the animal control officers better learn what
evidence the prosecutor will want before going to trial.
