We thought our international supporters would be interested in seeing this message, which we've sent to our UK supporters.
Greyhound Action is urging all our supporters to join the League Against Cruel Sports, for two very good reasons.
Firstly, we want to give as much support as possible to the League's campaign to abolish hunting with dogs. Such a ban would not only save many wild animals from horrific cruelty, but would also spare thousands of dogs per year from death at the hands of the hunting community, when they are deemed no longer fit for the purpose.
Although our campaign is mainly aimed against greyhound racing, Greyhound Action is also opposed to hare coursing and the hunting of other wild animals using greyhounds and lurchers, not only because of the cruelty to and killing of wildlife caused by these activities, but also because of the injuries to greyhounds/lurchers which occur and the fact that these dogs are not infrequently abandoned or killed when considered no longer good enough for hunting or coursing. A person who derives pleasure from watching wild creatures terrorised and/or torn apart by dogs, cannot be trusted to have compassion for any animal.
The abandonment and killing of lurchers in Britain occurs on an even greater scale than that of greyhounds and a comprehensive ban on hunting with dogs would considerably reduce the demand for the breeding of all dogs used for that purpose, leading to a reduction in those "disposed of" by the hunting and coursing fraternity.
Secondly, we want the League to join us in calling for a ban on greyhound racing and in educating the public not attend or bet on dog races.
The League currently has a campaign in relation to greyhound racing, but this is only for improved welfare measures and, in the long run, could easily do more harm than good to the cause of greyhound protection, because it doesn't properly address the main problem with greyhound racing, which is all the dogs that get put to death. Also, the League's statement that "greyhound racing is not inherently cruel" is already being used by the racing industry against those who want dog racing done away with altogether.
The League is wasting a marvellous opportunity to get rid of greyhound racing for good. The industry is on the ropes, with dozens of tracks closing in recent years and the two main track operators in financial difficulties. If the League concentrated its campaign on educating the public to boycott greyhound racing and on working for an eventual ban, more tracks would close, meaning fewer greyhounds bred to be put to death, and MPs would increasingly support a ban as they saw public opinion moving that way. This would especially be the case if hunting with dogs were banned and the League was able to devote more resources to campaigning against greyhound racing.
So please, join the LACS now and, once your membership has been confirmed, write them a letter urging them to campaign for a total ban on greyhound racing.
As a League member, you will be entitled to attend the LACS AGM, which starts at 2pm at the Museum of London, London Wall, London EC2Y 5HN on Saturday, July 10th. Please try to be there, if possible, as greyhound racing will almost certainly be on the agenda.
Annual membership of the League costs Family £30, Individual £20, Unwaged £10.
