Wildlife conservation elicits strong opinions from environmentalists,
hunters and animal-lovers alike. These groups will surely be united in
their disgust at the showboat slaughter, near Churchill Falls, of more
than 30 caribou belonging to a fragile herd of about 100.

The Quebec Innu who perpetrated this did so to express their unhappiness
with the Newfoundland government, which, they say, has restricted hunting
without consulting them. Whether this is true or not, it is hard to think
of many sustainable objections to a measure meant to preserve a herd on
the brink of extirpation.
