It’s been a tough year for Oregon’s bald eagles. This past Sunday yet
another human-caused injured bald eagle was delivered to the Portland Audubon
Wildlife Care Center.
The mature adult eagle had a broken wing and an x-ray showed a bullet in its
chest. Bob Sallinger called it “unfortunate,” and added, “we see a good deal
of this kind of thing each year.”
Portland's Audubon Care Center isn’t alone. Near Eugene, at the Cascades
Raptor Center, assistant director Laurin Coggins says they’ve taken in their share
of casualties too. They’ve healed eagles that have been gunshot, hit by
trucks and birds that have had run-ins with power lines.

But the worst cases have been the recent eagle poisonings – 17 to date.
Volunteers have been able to capture some of the poisoned birds while they were
still alive – sadly, Coggins notes, most were captured too late.
