MARK COLVIN: The millionaire property developer, Warren Anderson, spent most
of the week sitting in the Darwin Magistrates Court, where his company faces
charges of animal neglect.
The company was originally accused of neglecting 2,200 rare and exotic
animals at its Tipperary Wildlife Sanctuary, by depriving them of feed last October.
But to simplify court proceedings, the Magistrate will decide the case only
on the experience of two southern white rhinoceroses.
And as Anne Barker reports, the closure of a north Queensland wildlife park,
which had hoped to buy Tipperary's most exotic animals, has raised new
questions about their fate.
ANNE BARKER: Warren Anderson is normally a media recluse. The
multimillionaire rarely, if ever, speaks publicly about any of his myriad business interests.
And apart from his famous stoush with journalists at Darwin Airport last
year, until now he's made no comment about the sensational allegations that he
neglected his rare and exotic animal collection on Tipperary Station.
(archival audio excerpt)
WARREN ANDERSON: You press have written things about it you know nothing at
all about, and you've maligned me all over the papers, and my lawyers?
