Demand an End to Using Live Animals in Classroom Demonstrations &
Experiments
Each year, college and university "life sciences" programs consume thousands
of animal lives in cruel, crude, and unnecessary physiology demonstrations.
Despite the availability of humane and more effective methods of teaching
physiology, a number of institutions continue to force inexperienced
students, who have no medical or veterinary training whatsoever, to conduct
highly invasive and ultimately deadly experiments on frogs, turtles,
rabbits, and rats.

Please join in PETA's campaign to contact college and university
administrators across the country.

University of Pittsburgh & Carnegie Mellon Students Protest Captive Wildlife
Exhibits
"VAL Protests the Bash"
By ROCHELLE HENTGES
Staff Writer
April 06, 2004
During the Pitt Program Council's Bigelow Bash on Saturday, attendees had
the chance to interact and take photos with exotic animals, including a
snake, a chinchilla and a monkey.
But Voices for Animal Liberation, a Pitt-based group that includes both
community members and Pitt and Carnegie Mellon University students, spoke
out against the animal exhibit.

Animals in traveling acts and exhibits 'endure constant stress' by being
'confined to tiny cages and gawked at by crowds,' VAL wrote in a letter sent
to Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Jack Daniel and Izabell Musial,
who was then the Pitt Program Council's special events director.
VAL is also urging the PPC to adopt a formal, written policy that would ban
live animal exhibits at PPC events.
Michael Croland, a CMU junior who demonstrated with VAL on Saturday, said
that he is prepared to start a 'call-a-day' campaign in which VAL members
call the offices of Daniel and the new PPC special events director, who
Misuraca said will be Emily Yosd.

University of Alabama Student Group Spreads Veganism All Over
AARF educates students about animal cruelty
By Caitlin Tudzin
Senior Staff Reporter
March 22, 2004
They're here, they're animal lovers and they want you to become a
vegetarian.
One of the main purposes of the Alabama Animal Rights Fellowship is to urge
students to adopt a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle and to inspire students to
become more involved in the animal rights movement. AARF spends a great deal
of time educating students about cruelty to animals and how it can be
avoided.
AARF President Brian Davidson, a senior biology major, said his organization
presents tables at the Ferguson Center regularly, holds protests and
demonstrations, assists greek organizations on campus with educational
programs, holds regular potlucks and works closely with media to get the
group's voice heard.
"Because of this constant activity, many students have changed their
lifestyles and diets." he said. "The campus body as a whole has been
educated on issues concerning the ethical treatment of animals."
Davidson said this year alone AARF has held 16 demonstrations in Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham and Montgomery. One of the group's main demonstrations has been a
protest of KFC restaurants nationwide.
For the rest of the semester AARF will continue distributing information to
students about how they can lead cruelty-free lifestyles. Additionally, it
has several demonstrations planned for the month of April, such as a protest
of IAMS for its testing of animals to improve pet food.
Several potlucks have also been planned to allow students the opportunity to
try vegan food. The group also plans to celebrate Earthfest on April 24 by
grilling veggie dogs and burgers near Woods Hall.
