Police down to 10 suspects in zoo deaths
Tuesday, April 6, 2004 Posted: 7:14 PM EDT (2314 GMT)

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Police have drawn up a list of 10 zoo employees as
possible suspects in the poisoning deaths of more than 70 animals at the Sao
Paulo Zoo, officials said Tuesday.

Between January 24 and March 9, a total of 73 animals, including golden lion
tamarin monkeys, capuchin monkeys, tapirs, an elephant and an orangutan,
were found dead at the zoo, one of the world's largest.

Police inspector Clovis Ferreira de Araujo told reporters that all the
animals had been poisoned with sodium fluoroacetate, which is used in
powerful rat poisons that are banned in Brazil.

Araujo said that all 10 suspects are employees of the zoo. He said that no
arrests have been made "because we still lack the corroborating evidence we
need to link the suspect, or suspects to the crime."

A local court had given Araujo until Tuesday to conclude his investigation,
but he said he would ask for an extension in order to gather more evidence.
