AR-News: (CA) Gopher derby gets gassed

SASKATOON -- Saskatchewan's gophers can breathe easier and run more freely 
this year as the bounty that has been on their heads for the last two years has 
been lifted. The Saskatoon Wildlife Federation's annual gopher derby, aimed at 
controlling the rodent's population, has been cancelled. 
"I don't think the conditions this year merit it," said Len Jabush, the 
federation's business manager and organizer of the derby. 
Heavier rain in 2003 resulted in more vegetation, which gave predators more 
places to hide and hunt the rodents, Jabush said.
