A fiercely independent elderly Alberta woman conceded Monday that 62 horses
were too many for her to look after.
Alexia Linton, 76, will be allowed no more than a stallion, five mares and
any foals they produce, for at least the next year.
The Alberta SPCA seized 62 horses from her farm near Mundare in October,
after finding there wasn't enough feed for them.
Linton, a retired accountant, insisted Monday in an interview that she is
able to handle horses at her small farm 60 kilometres east of Edmonton. "I can
still ride and train and break horses."
In provincial court she pleaded guilty to a charge of causing or permitting
animals to be in distress, under the Animal Protection Act.
The judge accepted a joint submission from the defence and prosecution that
for 12 months Linton be limited to just six mature horses and any foals they
produce. She will be able to keep the foals for up to a year from birth.
