Shanghai Daily news
Sixteen years have passed since Xu Kai picked up a sick white Persian cat
from the street and gave it a home full of love.
That cat was the start of Xu's campaign to save homeless animals, a crusade
that has the local 86-year-old man living in a house jam packed with
four-legged friends.
Currently, about 110 cats and two dogs live with Xu in his 130-square-meter
home in Xinchang Township of Nanhui District.
Neighbors and friends call him "the cat king of Shanghai".
"I've been fond of animals since I was a little boy," Xu said. "Cats can't
speak when they are hungry or sick. Compared to man, they are weak. So it's our
duty to take care of them and to love them."
Xu said his cats have become the most important part of his life. Besides
watching news in the afternoon, he has devoted all his time and energy to them.
He seldom goes out, fearing that the cats will miss and worry about him.
Xu's love for the cats doesn't go unreturned, he says. The animals constantly
play around him and always try to sleep with him.
