Live exporters will face stricter government intervention and higher animal
welfare standards under plans unveiled by Agriculture Minister Warren Truss.
However, the government does not propose to close down the Portland export
facility as proposed by an independent report.
The live trade, under pressure since the Cormo Express affair last year, will
have to pay a compulsory research and development levy and abide by an
enforceable code of practice.
Companies found to have breached animal welfare standards will lose their
export licences. Company directors will also be barred from setting up new firms.
Mr Truss released the government's response to the Keniry report into the
Cormo affair in which 57 000 Australian sheep were turned away by Saudi Arabia on
health grounds.
The minister said the government was becoming more involved in the regulation
of the industry by responding to the report, and was also trying to force the
industry to lift its game.
