To Everyone regarding Best Friends and 21st Century CARES discussion,

I would like to put in my two cents on this issue. In my experience,
most grants are given to "scientifically based research". In other
words, research, programs, interventions, etc. that provide hard core
data that either confirm or disconfirm hypotheses. At least this is
true in the field of Education, especially with the "No Child Left
Behind" policy. I am not saying that this is bad, I am just saying
that this is how it currently is.

Furthermore, most people with real power care less about Humane
Education and more about test scores, etc. So, there is a way to be
creative. Design a program that will simultaneously improve reading
scores, etc., but that will be delivered via a Humane Education
approach. That is the best way to get into the schools AND measure the
effectiveness of a Humane Education program. The idea is to put a spin
on it that will appease educators, parents, etc. and allow you the
abiliity to assess the students prior to your program and at the end of
your program. This way direct gains in achievement and or attitudes
can be measured. It is the ONLY way to "scientifically" show that
Humane Education is effective. Doing this requires that certain people
are trained in delivering the program and analyzing the results (i.e.
data analysis). The funds to do this can come from either donations or
grants.

If anyone is interested specifically in how I plan to carry this out
and measure the effects, please email me directly.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeanette Shutay Ph.d.
