Patna, Apr 5 (IANS) :
About 80 endangered Ganga turtles, so brutally packed together in a vehicle
that only 38 survived, have been seized from smugglers in Bihar.
While about 40 of the turtles had died, 38 of the rare animals were
critically injured and are being treated at the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park and Zoo
here.
Five of the smugglers were arrested after the seizure at Mokama, 100 km from
here, Sunday evening.
Police officials said the turtles were packed in a Tata Sumo vehicle. When
officials stopped the vehicle suspecting that something was wrong, the smugglers
tried to run away but were caught.
Zoo director Ranbir Singh said the turtles were badly injured and their legs
were fastened with an iron wire.
