NEW YORK, April 5 (Reuters) - Swift & Co., a privately held beef and pork
processor, posted a quarterly loss despite higher sales, hurt by $43
million charges related to mad cow disease.

John N. Simons, president and chief executive of Swift, said in a
statement that beef prices have fallen the first case of BSE, or bovine
spongiform encephalopathy, was discovered late last year.
