AR-News: (US IL) Jefferson students learn responsibility from feline 'student'

PRINCETON -- Reading, writing and 'rithmetic are considered core subjects in 
any educational curriculum. But what happens when you integrate those 
important subjects in a project that not only builds good citizenship but creates an 
understanding of what it means to help others?
Second graders at Jefferson Elementary became aware of the needs of Friends 
of Strays" No-Kill Animal Shelter last fall, when a new "student" from that 
organization joined their class.
Teacher Kathy Clark gave the new classmate, a rambunctious kitten named 
Tootsie, a few more privileges than the other students. Tootsie only came to school 
three, maybe four, days a week. She was allowed to sleep, if she got tired, 
or to just sit by the window and watch the birds outside. Sometimes, Tootsie 
would wander around the room, if she got bored or restless. She was even known 
to drape herself across her classmates' desks. In fact, Tootsie wasn't even 
above crawling inside a desk now and then.
