CENTER POINT, Ind. -- Big cats -- lions, tigers, cougars, etc. -- are just so
. . . cool. So strong, so savage; yet so elegant, so graceful.
Joe Taft knows what people are thinking. He thought it himself. When Taft was
in his 20s and bent on impressing people, he had the harebrained dream of
owning a pet cheetah and driving the beast around Terre Haute, where he was
majoring in philosophy at Indiana State University, in a Lotus sports car.
Taft settled for an ocelot and an MG, but still he felt mighty fine. Owning a
wild animal was indeed novel in the mid-1960s. It's still unusual.
