REGISTER-PAJARONIAN STAFF REPORT

Anglers might be in a hurry to head out into Monterey Bay today, the first
day of recreational salmon season. But with sea otter deaths by boat strikes a
major concern, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Defenders of Wildlife, and other
local organizations strongly urge recreational fishers and other boaters to
safeguard sea otters and other wildlife by slowing down, in Elkhorn Slough.
"Last year, three sea otters were killed by boat strikes within approximately
one week of the opening of salmon season," said Andrew Johnson, sea otter
program manager at the aquarium. "Sea otters in the wild are already struggling
for survival. These deaths are tragic, unnecessary and preventable."
