Newsletter: April 2004

Welcome to the Animal Sentience Newsletter, keeping you in touch with news
and research about animal feelings, consciousness and emotions.
We get a lot of questions each month about pet behaviour - particularly dogs
and cats. While there are pet behaviour consultants in various countries,
many of you want some simple indications as to whether your pet is happy. To
go some way to achieving this we've linked up with Animal Behavior
Associates in the US to bring you a couple of "healthy behaviour" quizzes -
one for dogs and one for cats. Try them out, and see how "healthy and happy"
your pet is.
Many varying items in the news this month - from scientific research to
singing dingos! We've also got news about salamanders, bulls, baboons, mules
and polar bears. Some of these stories were spotted by our newsletter
subscribers - if you see something we might be interested in, please let us
know.
Although it's not sentience related, we've also published an introduction to
a new campaign from CIWF Trust - Eat Less Meat. The campaign doesn’t tell
you to be vegetarian or vegan, although both these diets can help promote
healthy lifestyles. If you want to carry on eating meat, for family, social
or taste reasons, the campaign explains many ways in which you can do this
while also enjoying healthier living, helping the planet and looking after
animals too!
Our subscriber numbers are continuing to increase, so we're obviously
talking about something that interests a lot of people. Please tell your
friends about the site - the more that people discuss the amazing inner
feelings of animals, the better chance we've got of improving their
treatment around the world.
And don't forget to get involved via our Forum area and send us any local
news items you spot.
Until next time,
Phil
Editor, animalsentience.com.

Exclusive Features
Dog and Cat Behaviour Wellness
Animal Behavior Associates in the USA specialises in helping people to
change their pet’s behaviour.
Not the same as training, they provide a range of services and information
that help you find ways to bring out good behaviour that can be reinforced.
This approach is easier, more successful, and less stressful for both you
and your pet to learn.
They have put together quizzes to give you an idea of how 'behaviourally
healthy' your dog or cat is.

News
Baboons can think abstractly
A team of psychologists has found evidence of abstract thought in baboons.
Chimpanzees have already demonstrated abstract thought, but this new find is
significant because baboons are "old world monkeys", part of a different

humans.
Living with humans has made dogs more social
Living with humans for hundreds of generations has altered the cognitive
abilities of domesticated dogs, making them more social and better at
reading understanding human communication, according to new research from
Harvard University.
Smarter than your average bear
Researchers studying the biology and behaviour of the polar bear are
unearthing ever more impressive and sometimes mystifying details about this

Charlie the steer befriends Annie the mule

20-some horses, several goats and an ever-changing number of dogs and cats.
Singing dingo wins trivia award
An Australian dog that sings, dances and plays the piano has been voted the

Female salamanders beat unfaithful partners
Researchers at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette , USA , have
