McDONALD'S is struggling to maintain its place at the top of the fast-food
chain, despite a dramatic turnaround in its financial fortunes over the
past 12 months.
...
McDonald's claims to have abandoned its growth-at-all-costs strategy,
which at one stage saw it scrambling to open 2000 outlets around the world
in a year.

Instead, the company has focused on improving the quality of its existing
stores and products. Conscious of criticism its food causes obesity -
claims that become the subject of legal action in the US - McDonald's has
been slowly introducing lower-fat dishes including its Salads Plus range,
a vegie burger and even fruit.

Fries will now be cooked in canola oil, placating vegetarian concerns
about animal fat.

Last week, McDonald's Australia announced moves to reduce the sugar
content of its buns and, in a bid to counter long-running suspicion and
conspiracy theories about its ingredients, will print nutritional
information on its packaging.
