The 27th meeting of The American Society of Primatologists will be held from

Research Center and the Department of Anthropology at the University of
Wisconsin. All meetings will be held in the Memorial Union at the University
of Wisconsin. Standing committees will begin meeting at 1:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, June 8th. The scientific meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. on
Wednesday, June 9th. The opening reception will be held in the evening on

Abstracts of the papers and posters that are going to be presented are at:

http://www.asp.org/asp2004/ConferenceSchedule.html#132

You can find abstracts such as:

SEX DIFFERENCES IN SALIVARY CORTISOL AND DHEA IN SIV-INFECTED PIGTAIL
MACAQUES J. M. Worlein, J. Ha, C. Blind, M. Laudenslager. (You might
remember that Laudenslager recently ended his studies on the relationship
between maternal separation and the progression of SIV in young monkeys.)

DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTS OF STRESSORS ON THE HYPOTHALAMIC-PITUITARY-ADRENAL
HORMONES CORTISOL AND DHEAS IN ADULT MALE RHESUS MACAQUES N. Maninger, J. P.
Capitanio, S. A. Blozis, J. D. Ruys, S. P. Mendoza. (You might recall that
Capitanio, one time president of the ASP, published a study not too long ago
explaining that a monkey raised with a dog becomes a better problem solver
than a monkey raised with a hobby-horse.)

MHC ALLELES INFLUENCE INFLUENZA INFECTION IN INFANT RHESUS MONKEYS (MACACA
MULATTA) G. R. Lubach, C. L. Coe, H. R. Crispen. (Some members of this list
may not recognize that C.L. Coe is the current pot-bellied, cigarette
smoking director of the Harlow Primate Psychology Lab.)

Here's one no one will want to miss: Roundtable: Primate Research and Public
Information, Jordana Lenon, Organizer (Class of 24 Reception Room). (You may
not recall that Lenon sent letters to citizens -- who asked for information
about specific monkeys at Wisconsin -- stating that even asking for such
information might be illegal.)

THE DEVELOPMENT OF OBJECT PERMANENCE IN RHESUS MONKEYS (M. MULATTA) PRODUCED
BY ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY D. J. Mandell, B. J. Crouthamel, G. P.
Sackett, G. C. Ruppenthal, L. C. Hewitson, C. Simerly, G. Schatten. (Here's
a little quiz: How many of these authors were trained by Harlow? (Hint:
Sackett has access to all the baby monkeys at the Washington primate
center.)

PHYSIOLOGICAL CORRELATES OF BEHAVIOR IN MACAQUE (MACACA MULATTA) MOTHERS
DURING THE FIRST MONTH POSTPARTUM AND DURING THE EARLY WEANING PERIOD: DOES
MATERNAL EXPERIENCE INFLUENCE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PHYSIOLOGY AND
BEHAVIOR? M. L. Schwandt, S. Lindell, C. Shannon, S. Suomi, J. D. Hi.
(Suomi, another of the monsters trained by Harlow does his work at the NIH
Animal Center in Poolesville. He works for the National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development.)

CALLING RATE AS A MEASURE OF STRESS REACTIVITY IN MOTHER- AND NURSERY-REARED
RHESUS INFANTS (MACACA MULATTA) M. L. Becker, D. E. Bernhards, K. L.
Chisholm, G. Maimon, M. Champoux, J. D. Higley, S. J. Suomi, J. D. Newman.

There may be no similar window into the current practices of the world's
most ethically challenged. I urge everyone to educate themselves.
