Chennai, Mar 31 (IANS) :
Animal lovers here have rescued 287 turtles from a century-old pond that has
gone dry, forcing many of them on land in search of a new home.
The pond is part of the Young Women's Christian Association (YMCA) hostel
campus along the busy national highway, the Poonamallee High Road, on the
outskirts of Chennai.
The inmates of the YWCA one day found turtles moving about on the premises as
the pond in which they had been living had gone dry.
The pond, known as the Mermaid Pond, was fed by a natural spring that has got
choked by years of silt formation.
