Normally, most school children view sheep as puffy white blurs dotting the
landscape along the highway. Any sheep they see close up are usually dancing
across the pages of their books or leaping in patterns on their pajamas.
But every spring, local children get the chance to see sheep and lambs close
up and personal, at the Oregon State University Sheep Barns, west of
Corvallis. During lambing season, hundreds of ewes give birth in the barns
to gleaming white and shiny black lambs, and some spotted lambkins who sport
both colors.
Draven Greene and another classmate discussed the possibilities of being
stuck in the woods without food, and whether it was better to eat bugs or a
baby lamb. "You could take the lamb and fire it up," Greene said, confident
that it was the practical solution.
