Sanderson Farms, Inc., may locate an integrated poultry complex in Moultrie,
Georgia, if it can determine there is enough interest in the area from
growers. According to published reports, if Sanderson decides to begin
operations in Moultrie, it will offer growers 15-year contracts unlike other
poultry integrators in Georgia that offer flock-to-flock contracts.
Sanderson needs about 100 contract growers to supply the operation, which
will include a hatchery, feed mill and a processing plant that would create
more than 1,700 jobs for the area. Georgia is one of three states being
considered for the poultry complex. The company's management team has also
looked at Alabama and South Carolina. Sanderson Farms' chairman and chief
executive Joe Sanderson said last week that the company would make a
decision in 30 to 60 days on where to locate the complex. The company's
investment for the entire project will be about $187.7 million.
