A Mildmay dairy farmer is heading to court after inspectors found 30 dead and
20 starving cows, even though there was feed on the farm. Inspectors said the
farmer had piled some of the emaciated carcasses in the barnyard, but at
least 15 dead cows were still tied up, with chains around their necks, in the
stalls. The 30 surviving cows were standing in stalls with more than 30
centimetres of manure on the floor, surrounded by dead cows.
"This is one of the worst scenes I've had to deal with," Jennifer Bluhm, an
inspector with the Grey-Bruce branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), said yesterday.
"If you drove by, it looked like a regular farm. It was neat and tidy on the
outside and a horror on the inside."
