A man who mistreated more than 70 pigs was today banned from keeping animals
for life and ordered to pay £7,500 costs.

Michael Powell, 60, from Wetherby, West Yorkshire, was found guilty of
causing unnecessary suffering after RSPCA inspectors found the bodies of 25 pigs in
outbuildings on his land.

Inspectors said the scene – in which the remaining animals had been forced to
eat the dead bodies – would be engraved in their memories for ever.

Leeds Magistrates’ Court was told how the inspectors visited Powell’s
smallholding in April 2001 and were “appalled” by what they found.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said after the case: “Bodies of dead pigs were found
piled one on top of the other in outbuildings, the carcass of a piglet was
discovered and live animals were eating the dead ones to stay alive. In total
inspectors found 25 dead pigs.”
