Animal welfare upped 


MEPs have voted to increase animal welfare by putting a strict limit on 
transport times for live animals. 
The European Parliament on Tuesday voted to keep an amendment tabled by MEPs 
on the agriculture committee.
Under the change it would be illegal to transport animals for more than nine 
hours.
The amended proposal will however struggle to win the support of national 
governments.
In particular, Mediterranean countries generally have fewer slaughter houses 
than northern European countries, and so favour longer transport times for 
animals.
