LOS ANGELES (AP) - A graduate student pleaded not guilty today to charges
that he took part in a vandalism and firebombing spree that damaged or
destroyed 125 sport utility vehicles, crimes that federal authorities
allege were acts of radical environmentalism.
Billy Cottrell, 23, of Pasadena entered the plea in federal court to one
count of conspiracy, seven counts of arson and one count of using a
destructive device. Trial was set for May 11.
...
In an affidavit, the FBI alleged that Cottrell, using an alias, e-mailed
the Los Angeles Times and claimed involvement in the Molotov cocktail
attacks on some vehicles.
The e-mails claimed affiliation with the Earth Liberation Front, a radical
group of environmentalists that has taken responsibility for other acts of
arson and vandalism, the affidavit said.
