DES MOINES, Iowa - Yum! Brands Inc., one of the world's largest fast-food
franchisers, is opposing a shareholder proposal to ban smoking in its U.S.
restaurants, which include the KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell chains.

Yum contends the proposal would make customers go elsewhere.
...
On the issue of animal rights, long a contentious one between Yum
management and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the company
asked shareholders to reject the group's call for a report on how
suppliers are conforming to company guidelines.

Yum's KFC chain has been the subject of an extensive protest campaign by
PETA, which contends that some poultry suppliers treat animals cruelly.
