WASHINGTON — They are ancient ambassadors of the sea. Weighing up to 200
pounds, their green-brown-and-black-shelled bodies swim and crawl onto shores from
Mexico to Malaysia.
But now, endangered by illegal poaching and trading, sea turtles need help. A
bill before Congress aims to preserve the creatures that have called Earth's
waters home for millions of years.

Members of the House Subcommittee on Fisheries Conservation, Wildlife and
Oceans last week heard from researchers, conservation activists and government
officials who mostly supported the bill. It is based on the Multinational
Species Conservation Funds, a program that has helped African elephants, Asian
elephants, rhinoceroses, tigers, apes and migratory birds.
The bill "will not by itself stop the slaughter of sea turtles or their eggs,
but it sends a powerful message to the world community that the United States
will not idly sit by and allow these species to disappear forever," said Rep.
Wayne Gilchrest, R-Md., subcommittee chairman and sponsor of the bill.
