In December the Oregon Humane Society and about two dozen animal shelters 
began implanting animals it adopted out with a new microchip. The problem, 
veterinarians say, is that scanners at vet offices throughout Oregon can't detect 
the chip putting 2,500 pets with the new chip at risk of getting lost. "What 
were they thinking?" said Lauren Smith, a veterinarian at Tigard's Sorrento 
Animal Hospital. Like many other veterinarians, she says the old system worked just 
fine. "I'd have to wonder if they were upset when DVDs came out," said Humane 
Society's director of shelter operations, Susan Mentley, . "I think that next 
year people will be shrugging and saying 'What was the big deal?' " Metro
