PORTLAND (AP) -- An initiated bill to outlaw bear hunting with bait, dogs and
traps goes before a legislative committee Wednesday, but its backers see
little prospect that the measure will win lawmaker support.
Robert Fisk of Maine Citizens For Fair Bear Hunting thinks the measure will
get little more than token consideration. That means Maine voters will decide
the issue in a statewide referendum in November.
Sen. Bruce Bryant co-chairs the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee.
Bryant supports the state's bear management practices and says it's bad policy to
try to manage wildlife by referendum.
