AR-News: (US NE) Charity auction of pets argued

At a charity fund-raiser that I emceed, a child brought out the next item to 
be auctioned - a cute puppy. 
Everyone admiringly cooed, "Ahhhh." Using the title of a song that was 
popular at the time, I said into the microphone, "Who let the dogs out?" 
The deejay at the event, to my surprise, immediately blared over the 
loudspeaker the song by the Baha Men. The audience clapped in rhythm and hooted: "Who 
. . . who, who . . . who-who!" 
Everyone got pumped up for the bidding. It didn't occur to me that the poor 
little dog may have been scared down to its paws. 
But scaring the pet isn't the biggest problem with auctioning puppies at 
charity events, which has happened often in Omaha and elsewhere.
