KORONADAL CITY - Some 139,000 four-legged animals in South Cotabato province
are facing contamination, which if not contained, could lead to the animals’
death and the critical crippling of the local livestock industry, following the
confirmed outbreak of four animal diseases in the area.
Dr. Lorna Lamorena, South Cotabato provincial veterinarian, said they were
alarmed by the outbreak of various animal diseases that already hit several
towns, including this city, in South Cotabato province.
She identified the animal diseases that broke out in the province as surra,
hemorrhagic septicemia, liver fluke and hog cholera.
At least 139,000 animal heads are in danger of getting contaminated from the
diseases. Of these, 54,480 are cows, carabaos and horses and 84,998 are hogs.
A report submitted by the veterinary office last week to the provincial
disaster coordinating council revealed that P7.7 million worth of animals from the
towns of Santo Niño, Tantangan, Banga, Norala, Tupi and Surallah were
initially damaged by the diseases.
