KRISHNAGIRI: A baby elephant which fell inside a pit near Chinnar River near Ogganekal in this district and was battling with life for two days was saved by nearby villagers on Saturday.
Forest officials told PTI that due to drought situation in the 29,000 square km Western Ghats, herds of elephants were moving to different places in search of water.
A herd of 15 elephants came to Chinnar River and started digging holes in the river bed for water. A two-month-old female elephant fell into a hole. The other elephants after a vain bid to save it went away. Nearby villagers hearing the cries of the baby elephant today came to the pit and saved it.
