[from Royal Oak Daily Tribune]

SOUTHFIELD - While his tiny patient lay peacefully asleep on the operating
room table, Dr. Michael Hood showed a visitor the not-so-delicate
instruments he would soon be using.

In one hand, he clutched a small, rubber-tipped mallet; in the other, a
narrow, steel chisel.

While crude-looking, the tools were all the veterinary surgeon would need
to help the limping, 8-month-old Yorkshire terrier that was delivered
Wednesday morning to Greenfield Animal Hospital in Southfield.

The dog, named Boston, was born with a disease that had ravaged his right
hip to the point that walking was difficult. His former owner, who bought
Boston from a pet store, decided to give the dog to a Madison Heights
animal adoption network rather than pay to get the damage surgically repaired.

After a story about the cute pooch was published in the Daily Tribune
earlier this month, the Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan
received enough donations from readers to cover the estimated $1,000 cost
of surgery.
