MIDDLETOWN | A Middletown nonprofit agency has an unusual and very
challenging clientele its guests are needy, messy and don't always get
along with each other.
They're the dogs and cats of Progressive Animal Welfare Society,
Middletown's animal adoption center. PAWS is a rare no-kill shelter, where
the animals are not euthanized. The PAWS no-kill philosophy is so
well-known that it has customers from as far away as Adams County.
Director Peggy Landis came to the shelter about 10 years ago, answering a
PAWS ad for a "puppy person." The job was a boon for an animal lover, she
said.
