ALP to regulate live animal export

A Labor government would make the live animal export industry more
accountable and force overseas countries to lift their animal welfare practices.
Opposition agriculture spokesman Gavan O'Connor said if live export companies
failed to invest in overseas abattoirs and boost animal handling practices
they would be denied export permits.
The comments mark a toughening of Labor's position on live exports as the
party hopes to exploit growing public concern about the trade.
The government has been under pressure over the live animal trade, worth $1
billion a year, since the MV Cormo Express and its load of 57,000 sheep were
stranded in the Middle East for almost two months.
