Kenya plans to move 400 elephants away from a reserve where jumbos are
breaking down fences and trampling crops in its biggest animal relocation exercise,
wildlife officials said.
Rangers in helicopters will fire tranquilliser darts at the beasts before
they are bundled into crates for the road trip from the overcrowded Shimba Hills
National Reserve on the coast to the Tsavo East National Park in southern
Kenya.
Edward Indakwa, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) communication officer, said:
"Shimba Hills is a very small ecosystem. The park has 600 elephants and they have
damaged the habitat."
