Srinagar, Mar 28 (IANS) :
The Jammu and Kashmir government plans to approach the Supreme Court to lift
the ban on the sale and manufacture of shahtoosh shawls, which are made from
the wool of an endangered Tibetan antelope.
Following a meeting between shawl makers and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed
Sayeed here Saturday, the government said it would present its case in the
Supreme Court, seeking the lifting of the ban on shahtoosh and to "clear
misconceptions created by wildlife activists about obtaining wool" for the shawls.
The Kashmir Shawl Manufacturers and Weavers Association (KSMWA) informed
Sayeed about problems confronting traders due to the ban imposed by the central
government on shahtoosh trade.
